Feedback on the mission to Senegal

Feedback on the mission to Senegal

Dakar, 4th to 6th of July 2023 – 22 European companies participated in the business mission which was organised by the AEWEN and ESECA partnerships. The aim was to explore the renewable energy, smart grid and water markets as well as to intensify collaboration among European and Senegalese companies.

The three-day mission included a comprehensive programme, which started with an overview of the local market. The conference was opened by the Delegation of the European Union in Senegal, followed by an overview of the energy sector made by the Ministry of Oil & Energy and by a representant of TotalEnergies which provided support for the mission. In addition, two panel discussions gave a deeper understanding of the water and energy markets. Senegalese national agencies and private companies highlighted their willingness to cooperate on innovation projects, the need to encourage technology transfer and the importance of sustainable projects taking into account economic and social ecosystems.

“I enjoyed the mission, which, through the round-tables and discussions with local manufacturers and participants, gave me a better understanding of Senegal’s energy context” (STOLECT).

The European companies also presented their business activity during pitch sessions organised on that day. The conference gathered over 80 participants including Senegalese companies, which gave the opportunity to start the B2B meetings that went on during the next two days. “I think it was good to both have our pitches on the first day and visiting potential partners and customers directly at their office” (MAGNANO).

Another important aspect, and not the least, was addressed during this mission: funding. Eurocham hosted a an afterwork dedicated to funding opportunities for European and African companies in Senegal. This was also an appropriate place to meet with other local companies on a more informal basis.

The mission achieved its goal: supporting SMEs to go international, explore the market and initiate collaborations. “Our main objectives were to know the water market in Senegal and to meet with potential clients. The objectives have been achieved” (BLUEPHAGE). Let’s follow up the collaborations!

You want to go international? Our next business mission will be in Tunisia from 25th to 29th of September, followed by a mission to Morocco in November.

Achieving the SDGs through the WEF nexus – replay of the capacity building webinar

Achieving the SDGs through the WEF nexus – replay of the capacity building webinar

AEWEN organised on 9th of May a webinar on the Water-Energy-Food Nexus. The nexus approach is being developed and studied by companies, research institutes and universities. The webinar was the opportunity for some of them to present their projects and the main challenges of the nexus.

As an introduction, the PRIMA Foundation defined what the WEF Nexus is and the challenges it faces. Adopting a cross-sectoral approach is a way to achieve the sustainable development goals. Multiple projects have already been carried out in the Mediterranean region, including the WEFE4Med project presented by the Cyprus Institute.

Research is being carried out on the nexus, as outlined by Politecnico di Milano, which aims to understand the impact that water infrastructures can have on ecosystems, water supply and energy production. Research is being carried out on African river basins, where over 300 dam projects are planned.

The private sector also has a role to play. For example, the company Iridra is demonstrating innovative solutions for wastewater treatment while integrating synergies with food and energy in the framework on the Hydrousa project. Green City Wallonie has developed a photovoltaic greenhouse to optimise crops and generate power, which can be used for water pumping. While Iris is working on the circular economy and reuse of water in the project Ô. You can replay the webinar to learn more about the Water-Energy-Food Nexus and the various projects.

Senegal: Discover a market with great potential.

Senegal: Discover a market with great potential.

Water & energy business mission to Senegal:  July 3rd-7th, 202

3 DAYS  TO FOSTER COLLABORATION BETWEEN EUROPEAN AND SENEGALESE COMPANIES. DISCOVER NEW OPPORTUNITIES, DISCUSS AND START JOINT PROJECTS!

The EU AEWEN project is organising its second business mission to Africa in the first week of July 2023. This mission will be the opportunity for European SMEs to explore renewable energy, smart grids and water markets in Senegal, to identify and initiate collaborations with Senegalese companies and organisations and to start their internationalisation in Senegal.  AEWEN is organising this mission in collaboration with another European cluster partnership, ESECA, which also has Senegal among its target markets and covers the energy sectors among its strategic areas.

Energy market in Senegal:

Senegal has steady plans for the deployment of renewable energy systems, both solar and wind, as well as plans for the development of a smarter grid system that will include the implementation of renewable energy farms. Also, the country has different funding programmes to develop projects in these areas and the Senegalese companies are looking for European companies in terms of collaboration in smart grid systems, microgrids, storage and renewable energy generation systems that will provide greener energy consumption. Right now, Senegal generates 80% of its electricity from non-renewable energies.

Water market in Senegal:

Senegal has abundant, though unevenly distributed, water resources. In the framework of the sectoral development policy letter, the government has set itself the goal of achieving the “sustainable development objectives aimed at guaranteeing access to drinking water and sanitation by 2030, while ensuring integrated water resource management“. In 2020, access to drinking water in urban and rural areas was over 97% and access to sanitation was 61.8%

The mission will include a one-day-event conference, with key stakeholders from Senegal invited to attend and present the country’s opportunities, visits to key stakeholders and installations, and ad-hoc B2B meetings for the European companies with Senegalese possible clients/partners.

The preliminary programme includes:

03/07 – Arrival in Dakar and dinner with the EU participating companies

04/07 – AEWEN- ESECA joint event. Conference with invitation to Senegalese ministries, government, associations and key stakeholders. Presentation of the market, opportunities, funding, regulation and B2B meetings in the afternoon.

05 & 06/07 Individual B2B agendas for the European SMEs. Meetings at the offices of the companies of interest selected.

07/07 – Return trip to Europe

REGISTRATION

In order to gather your interest in the mission and the necessary information to start working on these agendas, we encourage you to complete this simple registration form

The deadline to submit the form is the 30th of April.

ESECA and AEWEN will fund some of the costs for the participating SMEs.

Africa Europe Water and Energy Network (AEWEN) is a partnership formed by four European clusters (Tenerrdis, TWEED, CLEVER and CWP) from France, Belgium, Italy and Spain. The project aims to develop and implement a joint strategy for the internationalisation of SMEs and to create a network of actors in the water and energy sectors between Europe, Morocco, Tunisia and Senegal.

European Sustainable Energy Cluster Partnership for Africa (ESECA) is a partnership formed by five European clusters (ACE, MEDEE, LE2C, MetaIndustry4 and ECPE) from Spain, France, Italy and Germany. Together they bring together around 550 organizations and 290 SMEs. The main objective of ESECA is to promote business collaboration between European companies in the renewable energy and smart grids sectors, in order to develop a joint internationalization plan with common objectives towards the sub-Saharan African markets (Senegal, Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania and Rwanda).
